What to Do If You Suspect Your Loved One Is Suffering
Nursing home abuse and neglect are, sadly, extremely common. Nursing Home Abuse Justice reports that an estimated five million seniors are abused every year in the United States. The actual number of nursing home abuse instances is unknown, as many residents are unable or unwilling to speak up for themselves when abuse or neglect occurs. In fact, it’s believed that as few as only 1 in 14 (or even 1 in 24, depending on the study) instances of nursing home abuse and neglect are reported.
It’s important that family members and loved ones are able to recognize the signs of nursing home abuse—such as bedsores and unexplained injuries, wandering, and even elopement—so that they can take swift action at the first indication that abuse or neglect is occurring. If you believe your loved one may be a victim of such treatment, immediately contact the appropriate authorities. You may report the abuse to the Texas Department of Health and Human Services at (800) 458-9858.
If possible/necessary, remove your loved one from the facility where you suspect abuse/neglect is occurring and, as soon as you are able, contact an experienced nursing home abuse attorney. You and/or your loved one may be entitled to financial compensation for damages associated with the abuse, such as medical bills, disability, pain and suffering, and more.
